31 Days of Creative Practice (What My Series Is About)

31 Days of Creative Practice (What My Series Is About)

I love the month of October. It’s the best month ever for so many reasons, but mostly because it’s a time to celebrate life and renewal. Fall has a way of doing that – reminding me to celebrate even in the middle of storms, to lean in, and to not give up hope. For the month of October I’m participating in the #Write31Days challenge. In my series I will be practicing different forms of creative art making. I may or may not write always about the art making because it really is more about creating something from the materials I have on hand and then sharing written words about them.

My creative practice series will include lots of things I enjoy making: hand lettered things, mixed media pieces on paper or canvas, art journaling, found poetry, drawing, sketching, faux calligraphy, gluebooking, black out poetry, painting with acrylics and watercolors, bible journaling, and other art practices.

I begin with this brief thought on why I do what I do. For me creative practice is about making space to be – whole, free, authentic, faithful, true to purpose, and engaged in living out various expressions of encouragement, faith, and hope. I make to make. I make because I’m interested in learning new things. I make to hone my skills. I make to try it out and see if it’s something I like and can do over time. I also see creative practice as a way to practice peaceful rest.

When I’m engaged in creating and making, it gives me an opportunity to process life, concerns, issues, prayers, anxieties, hopes, and dreams. Creative practice is like widening life for margin, and you need a bit of margin to birth the expressions beating in your heart. Well, maybe that’s just me; and that’s okay. I’ll still be here holding on to great dreams and breathing life into them birthing them on to page, book, and canvas. I’ll keep showing up. I’ll do it for the process.

I encourage you to engage in your own creative practices too. There’s something magical and empowering about finding your artistic voice. I believe we all have one in some way, shape, form, or fashion.

Each day (or whenever I write) for the series I will post the link on my page for my #31DaysOfCreativePractice. Come along and read.
