To Simplify Is To Cultivate

A new year, another chance, and more opportunity rises the horizon. This is the promise of every year year that springs upon us. Maybe it catches us off guard because we’ve been so busy living. Maybe we were doing our thing and time flew by. Perhaps we were in the final throes of life’s crazy, unexpected tailspin and survived. It could even be that we walked into a giant ball of mess or we barely eked our way out of one. Whatever 2017 was, we say “we see you and acknowledge your existence and what you brought us through, but now we forge ahead graciously and boldly.” The new year beckons a bit of restructuring, analyzing, and reconfiguring. Plainly put: we’re invited to simplify, and to simplify is to cultivate.

Cultivate what? It depends on you and what you’re after for your life. It depends on me and what I’m going for in my life. For all of us the goals are different, but what if this go round, we approached the new year with a different perspective? What if we didn’t immediately dive headlong into ALLtheTHINGS we think we need to do just because everyone around us is deep diving and taking January by storm? One person’s simplicity may be another’s complexity. We don’t know until we give ourselves time and space to wrestle to the root the essence of what we truly want to have accomplished in the next twelve months. This, my friends, is what it might mean to simplify – to ease into the year a little slowly. It means take time to get down the business of who we are and what we’re all about. It is to:

To simplify is to cultivate the heart, soul, and mind. It’s a way of saying, “I am worth loving and caring for so I can live into the bigger dreams and realities meant for me. I don’t have to follow the way the world does things to live out my purpose.” To simplify is to cultivate what we most need to get to where we want to be.

I encourage you to ease into 2018. Pause. Ask. Seek. Knock. What is the quiet whisper beckoning you, the one that refuses to let you go? Listen, and then (perhaps) you will know with certainty how to move swiftly into this year with a calm yet fierce fortitude.

Tell me how you’re easing into this year. I’d love to hear your stories.
